Our sail from Palmerston Island in the Cook Islands was a very "lively" one! We had very strong winds and big rough seas right off the beam (side) of the boat. We had reduced the mainsail down with two reefs, and had our headsail partly furled in. As the sun came up on my watch on the third day out, I noticed something was amiss ... we were now running two halves of our mainsail!! We were forced to lower the sail right down to the third reefing point, and run with a tiny little triangle of canvas for the remaining four days to Tonga ... but with such strong winds, we still managed to maintain an average of 5 knots of boat speed!! After six days, we were all feeling exhausted, queasy, and sick of being thrown about - along with the contents of the boat. This was definitely our worst passage yet! | |
